Magna Carta Conference

It is highly appropriate that Canterbury, as one of the so-called Magna Carta Towns, should have a central place in the 800th anniversary celebrations for Magna Carta in June 2015.

A copy of the 1215 Magna Carta survives today in a late thirteenth-century register (CCA-DCc-Register/E (General Cartulary, 1290-1300) now preserved in Canterbury Cathedral Archives. To help launch Canterbury’s celebrations, Canterbury Christ Church University will be co-hosting a conference on Saturday 6 June 2015 on Magna Carta, King John and the Civil War in Kent, in collaboration with Canterbury Cathedral Library and Archives, and the Canterbury Branch of the Historical Association. The conference will showcase new and groundbreaking research on Kent’s role during this pivotal period in English history.
